I guarantee that we all have some toxic people in our lives.

You know the ones who are always complaining or being negative, abusive or just plain not fun to be around.

The key thing to note in this relationship is that you are probably not the cause of their unhappiness; it’s the way they have chosen to respond to their experiences. By taking the blame onto yourself you are taking away their responsibility to themselves and to you.

You need to approach the situation with optimism and love, no matter how hard this might seem to be. The one thing you cannot let happen is to be drawn down into their negativity and unhappiness.

The following is a short parable that might give you a little insight on what steps you can take to fix the problem.

There once was a farmer living out in the country. He enjoyed his simple life and was satisfied with the tasks each day brought him.

The farmer got all his water from a well near his house. One day when he pulled a bucket of water out of the well he noticed that it had gone putrid and knew that he couldn’t drink the toxic water from the well.

After some consideration he came up with only two viable ways to proceed.

1) He could fill the well up with dirt and seal it off, then dig a new well in a different location. He understood that this would be a lot of hard work and it would be a pity to lose a well that he had put a lot of effort into making in the first place.

2) By going down to the river and bringing up buckets of pure water every day. He could dilute the toxic water in the well with the pure water from the river and over time it would become drinkable again. Again this would take a lot of hard work and time but it would mean that he could keep the well that was close to his home and had served him well.

The one thing he definitely knew was that no matter which option he chose he could NOT drink the water from the well.

The Toxic people in your life are like the water in the well. If you drink from it you will only make yourself sick. Sick in spirit. The happiness in your life will be sucked away and you will find yourself having to fight for your health and happiness to return.

So you have a choice to make.

If you think that the relationship is too toxic to recover and that there is no hope for a positive turn around then you need to seal it up. This may seem harsh or a hard thing to do, but you have to put your future happiness first.

Or you could bring a little pure water every day. You give a little happiness and positive energy into that person’s life every time that you see them. You always give to them. Then with effort and over time that person’s life will start to brighten and you will find your efforts rewarded with a bright new positive relationship.

Just remember that whatever you do.

YOU MUST NOT DRINK FROM THE WELL!

Don’t respond to their anger or negativity; don’t be drawn into their negative world. It will only make you sick and then you’ll both be stuck.
